“Whack-a-mole.” That’s how Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease doctor, described snuffing out coronavirus cases across America. “The Southern States were up—that goes down—you get Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri goes up, goes down, and now…” And now other regions are seeing outbreaks, he told Harvard Medical School during its Grand Rounds video series on Thursday. “Gov. Doug Burgum pleaded Tuesday with North Dakotans, but he again rejected the idea of issuing a statewide mask mandate,” reports the Grand Forks Herald. “Burgum said ‘masks are essential’ in preventing the spread of COVID-19, but he maintained that mandating them statewide is not the best way to tackle the virus.”
“The massive Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which brought more than 460,000 people to a tiny city of 7,000 residents in South Dakota in August, was a ‘superspreader’ event that was responsible for more than 260,000 new cases of COVID-19 across the nation,” reports Buzzfeed. “That’s the provocative conclusion from a new study from the Center for Health Economics&Policy Studies at San Diego State University, which also estimated that these cases cost the nation around $12.2 billion.” South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem called the report “fiction.”

But, if the spikes we saw after Memorial Day and the 4th of July are any indication, we very well could see our numbers increase with the Labor Day holiday now in the rearview,” reports Boise State Public Radio. “Even though it’s going down on most days, our number of new cases are still more than what we were at our first peak back in March and April,” Dr. David Pate told the station. “Secondly, our hospitals have twice as many patients with COVID in them today as we did at the worst point in that first surge.”

Other states in the Northwest include Oregon, Washington and Wyoming
